THE HISTORY OF CLASSIC SNOWMOBILE SALES:

Welcome to Classic Snowmobile Sales & Service. We are located in Southwest Michigan near Fennville & Saugatuck/Douglas, a couple miles from the Lake Michigan shoreline. This is home to some of the best snowfall in Michigan due to our famous "lake-effect" snowbelt. This has inspired me to be involved with snowmobile activity ever since growing up here in the 60's and early 70's, the prime era of vintage sleds.

Having snowmobiles in those days required a little bit of riding and a LOT of maintenance. Snowmobile dealers were abundant then, selling practically every brand available. (Well over 100 brands back then) By the mid-70's, however, thanks to a couple years of less-than-desirable snowfall and the energy shortages of the time, many of those dealers fell away as quickly as they had arrived. That left a lot of us enthusiasts riding machines whose manufacturers and dealers were no longer in business.
As we moved into the 80's and early 90's, I had noticed that there were still so many snowmobiles around, lying in backyards everywhere. I decided to start knocking on doors and before I knew it, I had more than 20 sleds in my yard, half of which were used for parts to keep the rest of them running!

After awhile, people started calling or stopping by wanting certain parts off these sleds. I got to thinking "Wow, this is kind of fun selling a few things" (and of course, recouping a fraction of my initial investment of obtaining them all). Classic Snowmobile Sales and Service was born. Before I knew it, my 12 year old son and I were on the road traveling the back-roads nearly every weekend, trying to buy whatever we could find. Eventually we owned over 100 snowmobiles. (sometimes even upwards of 150!)
It's kind of funny thinking back....in 1973, my first sled was a 1970 Rupp S-34 and as I looked at those 100+ machines, about 40% of them were also Rupp. When the Rupp collection started, I thought how cool it would be to own every model Rupp had produced over the years.

As reality set in I decided to scale back and focus on their race models, only two of which I hadn't owned (the 1971 Magnum 600 and the 1974 3D). It sure was fun lining them all up on a sunny, warm day in Summer, or a winter morning after a fresh snowfall for a photo shoot of the group.

At its peak, the collection numbered somewhere around 25 to 30 restored Magnums, Free-Airs, Nitros and a few standard models.

Having been in the body-shop/collision repair business from 1976 through 1996 certainly helped in the restoration process. Working with fiberglass Corvettes during those years provided a real advantage in prepping hoods and panels of these sleds. Not to mention the art of painting.

Ever since I can remember I've had a passion for going fast and "tinkering" with engines, so stepping into drag racing was an easy choice. In high school I raced a 1969 Mustang and after high school, a 1964 Nova, several 1968 Camaros (running et's in the 9.00's) and finally an 8-second rear-engine dragster. I sold off the race cars in the late 80's to grow my business and build a house. Fast forward a few years, with drag-racing having never really left my system, to the late 90's when my son (who was now old enough to race) and I got into grass-dragging snowmobiles. Like everything, we started small. Running stock machines at first, but getting that old taste of competition, and always wanting to go faster, I started building custom drag sleds. Two in particular running Open and Heavy Mod-440 & Heavy Mod-800. My son won high points titles in Heavy Mod-440, Heavy Mod-500 and placed 2nd in Open Mod-440 in the 2001 MSDRA series. Looking forward, with my 1952 Henry J Drag Car complete, there will be many a weekend spent back at the home track, finding ways to go faster and faster!
